What is “new age” music?

Let’s get one thing straight, right off the bat: Virtually NO ONE likes that term! That “new age” label has been distorted since it first appeared in the ’80’s and scares away many people who would otherwise enjoy this music! Many of us in this world prefer the term “contemporary instrumental,” but even that doesn’t begin to categorize the field!

This genre is an incredibly diverse, eclectic and prolific genre. Most would agree that solo piano and electronic music are pillars that most people would agree belong in the context. Most “classical” acoustic instrumentation can be found in the music, from the trumpet and flute to viola and English horn. Other instrumentation from other traditions and influences will be heard as well, including vocals.

The music is truly international, as artists from throughout North America, Europe, Asia, the Far East, Africa and Australia and New Zealand can be heard.

Give it a chance. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
