Why is there a show AND a podcast?

A few people have asked me why there’s a radio show AND a podcast….

When Audiosyncracy began, it was as a live radio show on KTEP FM in El Paso, as you might already know. The program still airs every Sunday night, as it has from the beginning, at 11:00 pm Mountain time (-7 UTC). The station was a short drive from my home and I’d been volunteering at the station for many years before Audiosyncracy was created.

I’d always known that I would eventually leave El Paso. When my son graduated high school, I was at a crossroads in my career and my wife and I were ready to leave. Of course, it’s difficult to host a live radio show when you don’t live in the same city, so I knew that was going to be a problem. I didn’t want to fall out of the distribution loop because I love this music and still wanted to be involved in the scene. The answer was the new technology called podcasting. I saw this as my chance to keep the program alive, wherever I ended up, so I started the eponymous podcast in 2007, which now has listenership from all over the world.

Surprisingly, when I’d given the station my last show notice, they invited me to continue the program on a recorded basis and both continue to this day. The podcast has languished in recent years because I’ve moved twice and had too many competing interests. Something had to give. However, I’ve decided to redouble my efforts at making Audiosyncracy fulfill its mission of connecting listeners with the new music these artists are making, so here we are.

Once upon a time, there was an Audiosyncracy stream but it is no more. A podcast can be supported with the consent of the artists’ to use their music, which I strictly uphold, but a stream is trickier with regard to the artists’ situation. While I could ask artists to support a royalty-free stream, it would be less honorable to do so and so I will reconsider a stream when I am more financially capable of doing so. Keep an eye on this space.
